Review: Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Primer & Velvet Noir Mascara

I received Marc Jacobs Beauty's new Velvet Primer and Velvet Noir Mascara complementary for testing purposes from Influenster (which, if you're not a member, I definitely suggest you sign up for free!). I'd never used a lash primer before so I was excited to see if it conditioned my lashes and maximized the benefits of the mascara that was applied on top.

This was my first VoxBox from Influenster. I have never used a lash primer before so I was quite excited to try this product, which I received complementary for testing purposes. The primer does lengthen my lashes and acts as a great base for mascara. I especially liked being able to coat my bottom lashes before applying mascara to ensure even application. Word from the wise: do not wait too long to apply your mascara after you’ve applied the primer (you don’t want it to dry!) — I do one eye at a time to ensure the mascara adheres to the primer. Overall, your lashes will look longer and fuller with the primer than without.

Together with the primer, the mascara delivers longer and fuller lashes. However, it did take me a couple of days to feel like I really "mastered" how to use it. For the first few days, my lashes looked a bit clumpy and almost spider-like. I much prefer long, separated lashes, which is why I love Blinc's mascara. I had a similar learning curve with Too Faced's Better Than Sex mascara, which I found a bit clumpy as well. Once you realize that you really don't need more than 1-2 coats of this mascara, it's glorious (as you can see in the photo below)! It gives your lashes an amplified look and it's extremely long lasting without flaking. You have the option to apply 3-4 coats and get a thick, dark, spider-ish length and volume, which is great for a night look, but I love applying only 1-2 coats for a more subdued day look.

I do suggest purchasing the primer as well, but the also mascara works well when used alone.

I've been using both the primer and mascara for a few weeks now and definitely recommend both products. The mascara has not fully replaced all other mascaras in my make-up bag but it's a great addition!
