fall trends

Saturday, October 3, 2015

It's pretty much common knowledge that fall is my favorite season. There is nothing better than throwing on a chunky sweater and fur shawl while slipping your feet into knit socks and over-the knee leather boots. Also, at the risk of sounding like a completely stereotypical girl, pumpkin spice lattes are the absolute best. You cannot argue with me. Your point is invalid. Pumpkin spice lattes are literally the best thing.

Now, we're currently dealing with a heat wave in my part of Canada, making it feel like the middle of July, but that hasn't stopped me from spending hours dreaming about my favorite fall trends and how I'll incorporate certain items into my everyday wardrobe.

Over the next few weeks, I'll be blogging about some of my favorite items; for now, I'm focusing on three trends that make me wish the weather was a bit chillier (just a bit).

Oh, how I love throwing on a cape over jeans and a t-shirt before running out the door in ankle boots. Warm, comfy, and extremely chic, a cape can elevate any look while making you feel like you're wrapped in a warm blanket (which is the best feeling ever). My favorites this season include a blanket cape from Vince, faux fur cape from MICHAEL Michael Kors, and wool and cashmere cape from Burberry Brit. I can't wait to throw on a Betsey Johnson leopard print cape I purchased a few years ago that ties into a bow at the neck; it's the easiest way to elevate black skinny jeans and motorcycle boots.

To be completely honest, I'm in a love/hate relationship with fur. Whether fur is an ethical fashion choice is always a heated debate. It's hard to know when purchasing a fur product whether the fur was acquired ethically or in a cruel manner. Personally, faux fur is the only thing that sits in my closet but I'm extremely picky when it comes to anything containing fur. Often, real fur can look stripped or almost bald when it's included sporadically on a collar or sleeve; faux fur can look very faux and almost crunchy because of its synthetical material. My favorite recent purchase is a Babaton faux fur collar from Aritzia; it's a great piece to accessorize a slip dress and leather jacket. I also love this Talula vest, Elizabeth and James coat, and Sam Edelman vest. It's a great material to cuddle up with that is both warm and luxurious (and that's truly the best of both worlds when you live in a cold climate).

We saw it over the summer but fall runway looks made it official: the 70s are back! Fringe, suede, and bold prints will be everywhere over the next few months so brace yourselves. If you don't feel like committing yourself to an entire blast-from-the-past look, throw on a vintage inspired accessory to give your look a groovy vibe (yes, I used the word groovy and I feel no shame). Throw up a peace sign in a floppy Lanvin hat, Chan Luu tasseled necklace, or BCBGMAXAZRIA fringe jacket to add a bit of #throwback to your look. Check back in the next few days for a new blog post featuring my favorite new bohemian dress from Forever 21. Long live the 70s vibes!
